Japanese neighborhoods have a long tradition of holding festivals ('Matsuri') in the Summer months. These usually involve lots of food stalls and arcade games for kids, a parade of dancers or stage dancing, and the bigger festivals include a fireworks show. Below are some of the most popular festivals coming up.
Held on the grounds of the controversial Yasukuni Shrine the Mitama Matsuri is a great mix of food stalls, religious sites and general revelry. Thousands of small lanterns are lit up at the shrines main gates.
A few minute walk from KUDANSHITA StationThe Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival features over 20,000 fireworks and is held along the banks of the Sumida River near Asakusa. It is usually extremely crowded, so get there early to get a place!
