TOKYO NATIONAL MUSEUM

One of the many museums in Ueno, the Tokyo National Museum consists of several large multilevel buildings devoted Japanese art and history - including displays of Ukiyo-e, Edo era swords and various cultural artifacts from Japan’s long history.

OTA MUSEUM OF ART

Just a short walk from Harajuku station, this small museum has a fine collection of Ukiyo-e and Japanese wood block prints and provides a nice oasis of culture. Regular and special exhibitions.

OPEN 10:30am - 17:30pm, Closed Mon and New Year break.
FEE: Depends on Exhibit but usually around 1000 yen

NEZU MUSEUM

A nice museum with a small collection of Japanese and East Asian art, with an emphasis on lacquerware and tea crafts. The surrounding grounds include a Japanese garden and tea houses.

OPEN: 10am-5pm, Closed Mon and New Year break.
FEE: Depends on Exhibition, but usually around 1000 yen

TEIEN ART MUSEUM

A varied collection of different art works exhibited in the former residence of a prince, the building’s retro style is part of the show.

OPEN: 10am - 6pm, Closed 2nd and 4th Wed of the month and New Year break.
FEE: Depends on the exhibiton, but usually around 800 yen.

SAMURAI MUSEUM

A very informative museum showing the history of the Samurai with displays of armor, costumes, swords. Guided tours available.

OPEN: 9:30am - 5:30pm, Closed First and third Mon of the month and New Year break.
FEE: Adult 1800, 12 and under 800 yen, 3 and below free

EDO-TOKYO MUSEUM

Provides a good insight into Edo period of Japan (1600AD-1850AD) with displays and full set pieces. Audio tour available.

OPEN: 9:30am - 5:30pm, until 7:30pm Sat, Closed Mondays and New Year break.
FEE: 600 yen

LOCATION: 5 minute walk from RYOGOKU station.

THE JAPANESE SWORD MUSEUM

This small and out of the way space has a large collection of Japanese swords and some samurai outfits on display.

OPEN: 10am - 4:30pm. Closed Mondays and New Year break.
FEE: 600 yen
